Valuing Culture is important to me. I appreciate both the uniqueness and difference of Chinese Culture.
Lip service is being given by political leaders to multicultural diversity, particularly with recent focus on specific migrant and emerging communities as they become the focus of negative media attention.
Personal and community safety needs to be maintained and Law and Order is addressed elsewhere. But additional resources need to be given to youth activities particularly those which bring diverse communities together integrating them in common activities e.g. sports, music and the arts with mainstream communities, both in city and regional locations.
Where young people are having difficulty accessing employment community service participation such as St John Ambulance, State Emergency Service, Landcare, National Parks and CFA volunteering needs to be encouraged.
With 70 million people being displaced as refugees around the world renewed emphasis and resources need to be given to State migration and multicultural planning so that new arrivals are readied to contribute to employment, sport and cultural activities. There need to be multi-lingual welcoming pamphlets at airports which direct people where to go for help and also list the expectations, rights and responsibilities. Eg we drive on the left side of the road and walk on the left hand side of the footpath, that we respect women and the elderly no matter what standard of dress they wear.
Our emerging Chinese community needs specific engagement, understanding and support. There needs to be an integrated approach to assisting with service delivery, encouragement to all members of this newer community to learn English to travel Victoria and learn about our wonderful State of Victoria.
Australia’s rich history of First Nation Peoples, Australian literature, art, flora, fauna and environmental sensitivity needs to be part of a new multicultural awareness. We live in a beautiful country. We need to cherish and actively value it. We need to be able to live in peace, free from fear.
